Louis Vuitton Fall Winter 2011
Louis Vuitton brought the expected fabulous this season with an urban mod styling that also hinted at the ski slope. But perfect construction and intriguing designs aside, the real star was color … one color in particular.
In this autumn/winter collection overcast with grey and black shadows, a few silvery blue and purple outlines lead us, as if by chance, to a beaconing hiss, a buzzing sting, a pulsing, throbbing electric-neon orange. This is the color of phoenix feathers, toucan-flavor lollipops, and the sacred war paint of Maasai burlesque dancers. And not just on the fringe of some pocket or collar line, but an entire suit in that blazing rapture Icarus so longed to taste. Scarf, shirt, belt, trousers, jacket … carry a fire extinguisher.
The fiery orange sizzle works as slacks with vests and shirts in the grey pallet too. And, however improbably, blends well as a double breasted jacket paired with forest brown trousers and dark maroon shirt.
A slightly darker orange-red pops as scarves under brilliantly constructed wool coats in dark blue, grey and black, or as an eye-catching handbag — like carrying a piece of exotic fruit. Speaking of carriables, LV has lost nothing on this front, introducing stunning totes, wallets and large leather bags, one in that bull-taunting fireball color that airport runway workers could use to direct traffic.
The radiant rocket-thruster spectrum busters aren’t the only head-turners here. There’s also an all light — almost white — kaki ensemble that’s fairly bold for a winter collection.
Mature houses like Louis Vuitton don't need crazy gimmicks. There are no futuristic barbarians here in trash bags and barbed wire. Just an innovative collection of Über-stylish yet wearable clothes — furs, wools and leathers, velvets, from semi-formal to casual. The versatile layering takes LV everywhere, including inside the electric eye of Arthur C. Clarke's HAL 9000.
